In the past year, the Press Release has been solidified as a foundational marketing tool for both the internet and real world marketing of large and small businesses alike. Why? Because the Press Release serves two purposes: It informs readers about your business and it provides valuable inbound traffic to your website, provided your press release is optimized for the best possible results in both arenas. From what I’ve seen very few people have any idea how to do this which means most people are missing out.

To be clear, there is no wrong way to write a press release, there are some basic formats that you need to have but most PR website directories will provide that formatting for you. What you can do if you write a press release is make sure that there is a reason for writing it. Are you planning an event that you want people to attend? Are you planning on donating proceeds to charity? Are you donating time to a charity? What is the reason that the press or the people should care? Take some time before you send out a Press Release and make sure that the message that you are sending is one people are going to want to be read.

That said the two areas that are of the most important when it comes to your Press Release and really any post that you are going to make on the internet is the Title and the Link. It never ceases to amaze me when I see a great press release with an event that should have gotten attention but didn’t because the title was something like “Company Name donates $10,000 to local charity.” Well that’s great, short and to the point and not giving really any information at all. Hundreds of Press Releases are sent and posted every day. How can you expect anyone to find it? What are your Tags, i.e. what industry are you in? Do you have a website? What keywords are you using? The most popular keywords need to be in your title, this can’t be stressed enough because Press Release Databases get indexed and that means that if someone is looking for information on a topic, very often press releases come up. Also what is the name of the Charity? Is it famous, if it is, YOU MUST USE THE NAME! This is important because if someone searches for that Charity, you absolutely want your press release showing up as a contributor. Your new title should be “TAG, COMPANY NAME Donates $10,000 toCHARITY NAME“ or in our case, “Fort Myers Marketing Firm Andrian Marketing donates $10,000 to the Red Cross.” Can you see how many ways that our release can get read?

The second biggest thing that is missing from so many Press Releases that I find on the internet is a link! I’ve read their releases I want to learn more, how can I find them? Some don’t even give the name of their website! A Press Release is a great way to get an inbound link to your site. For those of you who are trying to learn how to do this on your own and are not aware of this, Google ranks websites based on two things, Content and Inbound Links. The more inbound links that you have that match your content, the better your ranking will be when people search for that term. Not including a link or even an anchor tagged link in a Press Release, which is accepted on quite a few sites, is tantamount to leaving money on the table. The link you gain from your Press Release will improve the ranking of your website for the key terms in your anchor. If you think that you don’t know what an anchor tag is, I bet you’re wrong. Have you ever seen words that are colored like this “important keywords“ that links to a website? That is an anchor tagged link. The way that Google sees it is that those keywords relate to a website on the other side of that link and proceeds to give it a ranking for those keywords. I’m not saying that you need a hundred Press Releases, but to not get a free anchor tag when one is offered is a sin.

For added reference, look at www.prweb.com for great samples on writing press releases. If you know you need one now and are stuck, please don’t hesitate to call us, I’m sure we can help you. Call 866-990-8155 for help!
